From the Town of Babylon Beautification Program: Ten students representing each hamlet in the Town of Babylon were inducted as Junior Beautification Ambassadors by Supervisor Rich Schaffer on Monday, May 14 at a special ceremony held at the new Argyle Theatre. The students were selected for their leadership skills, volunteerism, community service and dedication to helping others.

The Beautification Program was designed to help educate residents and businesses about the importance of keeping the township clean and beautiful through hands-on activities and events to promote environmental stewardship.  The program also offers an opportunity to assist those in need through community service.  The appointed Junior Beautification Ambassadors will not only promote the program initiatives, but also gain an understanding of issues impacting our neighborhoods, share their acquired knowledge with peers and help organize interactive volunteer events. The Junior Beautification Ambassadors will also assist the town in its quest to encourage volunteerism and stewardship and promote an appreciative and caring attitude toward our environment and needs of others in our community.

Over 100 guests attended the ceremony, including area school principals and superintendents, the Beautification Ambassador Committee, Chambers of Commerce and Civic Leaders as well as local elected officials (Presiding Officer D Gregory, Legislators Tom Donnelly and Kevin McCaffrey) and representatives (Ann Parmely, Senator Phil Boyle’s Office, Brendan Cunningham, Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre’s Office).  Special guest, retired NYS Assemblyman Robert Sweeney, was recognized for his establishment of the Global Youth Service Volunteer Program, which he instituted through the Town’s Beautification Program over 15 years ago.

At the ceremony, Supervisor Schaffer bestowed the first Annual TOB Beautification Program Distinguished Service Award to college student and concerned citizen Travis Steward of North Babylon, in recognition of his continuous dedication and community service, his ongoing volunteerism and support of the Beautification Program.

The Town of Babylon would like to thank the owners of the Argyle Theatre, Mark and Dylan Pearlman, for hosting the event at their new, beautifully restored theatre.  We would also like to thank the Babylon Industrial Development Agency, Viking Printing, Gemelli’s Fine Foods and 7-Eleven for their generous contributions that helped make the ceremony a wonderful success.
