Town & Village partner to tear down longtime eyesore

Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta announced the demolition of a longtime eyesore on Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst.

“The destruction of this building is a great example of the Town of Babylon and its surrounding villages working together for the betterment of our community,” said Councilman Manetta. “The status of this location was of great importance to the local community, and we are happy that the ‘Gateway to the Village’ on Wellwood Avenue is now clear of this eyesore,” he added.

Located on the border of Lindenhurst Village and the Town of Babylon at 519 Wellwood Ave, Councilman Manetta, along with Councilman Terry McSweeney, worked closely with Village officials to expedite the tear of the former deli on the property that has been vacant for many years. The building is located on a major thoroughfare just outside of the Village of Lindenhurst’s jurisdiction, which created an eyesore for those heading into the downtown area. The parcel is zoned for single-family residence.

“Thanks to Councilmen Manetta and Councilman McSweeney for their hard work.  While technically outside our border, many residents consider the old deli as part of the Village so we have fielded many calls on this issue for many years,” said Village of Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata. “This project illustrates the strong bond between the Village of Lindenhurst and our partners in Government at the Town of Babylon,” he added.

The demolition was performed by a private contractor hired by the property owner.
