Receivers of Taxes (1872-present)

The Receiver of Taxes is not a policy making office, it is an administrative office, and taxes are collected in accordance with New York State and Suffolk County tax laws.

From 1872 to 1898, the Tax Collector was elected to a one-year term, starting in April. From 1899 to 1917, the Tax Collector was elected to a two-year term, starting in April.

The title “Tax Collector” was changed to “Receiver of Taxes” in the 1911 election. In 1919, elections were moved from April to November, and officials took office the following January. The Tax Collector position continued to be a 2-year term until 2006 when the term was extended to 4-years.
