Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Terence McSweeney were proud to be on-hand at the renaming of the marina at Gilgo Beach to the “Congressman Peter T. King Marina.” Babylon Town officials were joined by Harbor Master Tim Taylor, Lainie Altman of Assemblyman Michael Durso’s Office, New York State Senator John Brooks, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Former Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Gilgo Beach Inn owner Paul McDuffy, Wyandanch Ambulance Chief of Training Jordan Thomas, Ed Wiggins of New York State Senator Phil Boyle’s Office, Deputy Commissioner of the Town of Babylon Department of Environmental Control David Bligh, Bay Constable Ken Fellers, Ryan Carvano of U.S. Congressman Andrew Garbarino’s Office and Village of Lindenhurst Mayor Mike Lavorata.
Peter King served fourteen terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, and brought several important beach replenishment projects to Gilgo Beach and the surrounding areas. The congressman’s advocacy has been instrumental in saving the town’s beaches over the years. Following Superstorm Sandy, King led a successful fight in Congress to obtain $60.4 billion in emergency funding for victims of the storm, many of whom reside in the Town of Babylon. During his time in Congress, King also fought hard to bring veterans’ benefits into the 21st century, along with advocating strong support for funding to combat deadly illness such as breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Earlier this year, the Town Board unanimously voted to re-name the Marina after King, and the board is proud to do so in honor of King’s dedication to Babylon.
