On October 13, 2012 Richard J. Lozaro of Farmingdale earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
For his service project, Richard organized and led both scouts and adults in building eight bat houses at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. This was an ecologic project that served to 1) help give shelter to bats indigenous to the area that are declining in population, and 2) eliminate a local insect overpopulation issue. The bats that inhabit the new houses are known predators to mosquitoes and other insects that had become a nuisance in the park. The project included a fundraiser car wash, the construction of bat houses, and the installation of the houses.
