[ARCHIVED] Important Winter Weather Tips and Reminders

With our area currently experiencing extremely cold temperatures, the Town of Babylon would like residents to keep in mind these important tips and reminders to help you stay safe and warm during the harsh winter months.

- If you’re in need of a place to get away from the cold, the Town Hall Annex (281 Phelps Lane, North Babylon) serves as a warming center and is open 24 hours. For more information, please call (631) 957-3000.

- Make sure that your household heating systems are working properly and that vents are clear and unobstructed.

- Check the batteries in your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors often.

- When leaving the house, make sure you are bundled up in layers: gloves, winter hat, scarf, boots, etc.
- Be aware of the wind chill factor and work slowly outdoors.

- Do not leave pets outside for extended periods of time and remember to bring them inside.

- Make sure that you have enough supplies, such as blankets, batteries, food and water.

- In the event of a winter storm, take extreme caution and travel only if you absolutely must.

- Keep grills, camp stoves, and generators out of the house, basement and garage. Generators should be located at least 20 feet from the house.
- Keep an eye on local news sources for important weather updates.

- Sign up for Emergency Notifications and Alerts from the Town of Babylon.
