[ARCHIVED] Hurricane and Skywarn Webinars

The Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club would like to let residents know about two webinars pertaining to issues that may interest residents of the Town of Babylon.

The ARRL will host a 2015 Hurricane Season webinar on Monday, July 20. The session will get under way at 8 PM EDT (0000 on July 21). The approximately 90-minute session will address the role of Amateur Radio during the 2015 Hurricane Season, which runs through November. All who are interested in hurricane preparedness and response are invited to register for this online presentation. Here is the link to register copy and paste

Topics will include a meteorological overview of the current season; Amateur Radio station WX4NHC at the National Hurricane Center, ARRL Media and Public Relations, the Hurricane Watch Net (HWN), the VoIP Hurricane Net, and ARRL’s role in coordination.The program will include presentations by representatives of the National Hurricane Center and WX4NHC, the VoIP Hurricane Net, the HWN, the Canadian Hurricane Centre, and the ARRL. Webinar registration is open to all, but should be of particular interest to radio amateurs in hurricane-prone areas. The webinar will conclude with a Q&A session.

NWS Online Skywarn Class Scheduled Wednesday 7/22 at 7pm:

Learn all about severe weather. We will teach you to observe and report specific types of clouds that form “before” severe weather (hail, high winds, or even a tornado) develops. The information you provide will be used with our radar data to provide more accurate warning services for your and downstream communities that are in the path of thunderstorms. You will also be given safety tips to prepare for and respond to flash floods, severe thunderstorms, and lightning.

This free 2 ½ hour class is for the general public, including emergency managers, first responders, amateur radio operators, teachers, and students.
