Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Town Clerk Carol Quirk and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to thank NBA Champion Danny Green for his generous efforts in beautifying his hometown community. A traffic triangle located at the intersection of Belmont Avenue, which Danny’s Team Green already sponsors through the Town’s Adopt-A-Highway program, and Wyandanch Avenue has been decorated with paintings, shrubbery, perennials, sod and irrigation due to Green’s advocacy. Town officials presented Danny with a special proclamation thanking him for his continued dedication to giving back to the community and wished him well in his upcoming NBA season.
Danny Green, a member of the San Antonio Spurs 2014 NBA Finals championship team, was a two-sport athlete at North Babylon High School, where he played both basketball and football before transferring to St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset his sophomore year. Green then enrolled to the University of North Carolina where he ended his undergraduate stay by bringing the NCAA Division 1 championship to Chapel Hill in 2009. Following his NCAA success, Green was selected in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers before becoming a member of the Spurs. He then went on to make back-to-back NBA Championship appearances. In his first finals appearance in 2013, he set a league record for most three-point field goals in NBA Finals history. In 2014, Danny and the Spurs beat the Miami Heat in a rematch of the previous year to claim the NBA Finals Championship.
Despite being a nationally known basketball figure, Danny Green still returns home to North Babylon to take part in community initiatives, participating in local clean-up events and helping repair local basketball courts, while also hosting youth basketball camps. In 2014, Supervisor Schaffer presented Green with a key to the town for his contributions to the Babylon community.
