[ARCHIVED] Traffic Alert: New Travel Lane Shifts on Wellwood Ave/Sunrise Hwy

Motorists are advised that northbound and southbound travel lanes on Wellwood Avenue/CR 3 will be shifted from the east side of the Wellwood Avenue Bridge to the west side of the bridge beginning Wednesday, January 4. The sidewalk will also be relocated from the east side to the west side of the bridge. Between 9:00am and 3:00pm on Wednesday, January 4, at least one northbound and one southbound travel lane will be open to traffic while the work zone is prepared for the new traffic pattern. Thereafter, two travel lanes will remain open in each direction at all times. These travel lane shifts are necessary to complete work on the east side of the bridge and are expected to remain in effect for approximately 6 months. Drivers are being warned in advance of the new travel lane shifts via electronic road signs, but should plan to take alternate routes to avoid possible delays.

These travel lane shifts are part of the $20.4 million New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) project to demolish and reconstruct the Wellwood Avenue/CR 3 Bridge over NY Route 27/Sunrise Highway. This design-build project will improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and the approximately 90,000 motorists who travel over and under this bridge each day. To minimize the impact of construction on motorists, pedestrians and the community, traffic is being maintained on half the existing bridge while the other half is demolished and replaced.

For real-time travel information, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org, New York State’s official traffic and travel information source. Motorists may also obtain travel information from the INFORM Transportation Management Center cameras at www.INFORMNY.com.
