[ARCHIVED] North Babylon Students Host ReUse-A-Shoe Event

Recently, Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez joined with Town Special Assistant Terence McSweeney, Town Beautification Program Director Florence Findley and Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre’s Chief of Staff Kristi Reynolds to visit Mr. Christopher Brodmerkel’s class at the Robert Moses Middle School (RMMS) in North Babylon to thank the school’s Environmental Recycling Club for hosting its 4th Annual Nike ReUse-A-Shoe event. This annual event is held in recognition of Global Youth Service Day, the largest service event in the world, which highlights and celebrates the contributions of youth to their communities through volunteer service.

Through this event, students conduct a week-long sneaker collection to donate to the Nike store located at the Deer Park Tanger Outlets. Nike then recycles the old sneakers and uses them for surfaces for basketball courts and play surfaces for inner-city children. With leather shoes and sneakers taking over 45 years to fully decompose, this initiative not only helps our youth across the country, but it also keeps the sneakers out of our landfills.

Members of the RMMS Environmental Club consistently serve as stewards of our environment, hosting informational booths at the Town of Babylon’s Earth Day Festival, participating in the Town’s Adopt-A-Park program, and planting numerous colorful annual flowers throughout Phelps Lane Park.

The students were thanked for their commendable project and were presented with special Certificates of Appreciation for their outstanding commitment to keeping our community clean, beautiful and litter-free.
