[ARCHIVED] Hip-Hop artist Rakim honored with new sign in Wyandanch

From the Town of Babylon Beautification Program: 

The Wyandanch Day Committee joined the Town of Babylon in honoring the life achievements of William “Rakim” Griffin, who hails from Wyandanch and is one half of the legendary and world renowned hip-hop duo Eric B. & Rakim. Scores of admiring fans attended the sign dedication ceremony that was held at the Delano Stewart Plaza located in Wyandanch Village on Saturday, October 20th. The event marked a significant moment in the history of the Wyandanch community as a new sign was unveiled. The sign, “Wyandanch Welcomes You, Home of Hip Hop icon, William “Rakim” Griffin” is a welcomed reminder of his achievements and legacy.

At the special occasion, which included a ribbon cutting ceremony, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory presented a proclamation applauding Rakim’s success as a recording artist and thanked Charles Jackson and the Wyandanch Day Committee for their efforts in helping to recognize Rakim’s musical talents that will forever be embraced by the world stage and the Wyandanch community. Special guests included Wyandanch School Board President James Crawford, Commander Jorge Rosario of VFW Post 2912 and Bishop Troy Hill of Temple of Salvation and Deliverance Church of Wyandanch and DJ Bilal. DJ Bilal gifted the audience with stories of growing up with Rakim and told the crowd how Rakim will always consider Wyandanch his “home”.
