Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board recently attended the street renaming ceremony at the corner of Long Island Avenue and Deer Park Avenue for the late John Vigiano, an FDNY Captain and Deer Park resident who lost two sons in the terror attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001. United States Congressman Peter King, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, New York State Assemblyman Andrew Raia and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly were also in attendance.

Portions of Grand Boulevard and Lake Avenue—which run parallel and directly south of Long Island Avenue—were renamed after Joseph and John, Jr. following their passing.

Captain Vigiano lived a decorated life of service rising through the ranks of the National Guard, United States Marine Corps and Marine Reservist. Vigiano joined the FDNY in 1962 and was ultimately promoted to Captain in 1988. He retired in 1998 having served honorably for 38 years.

Following the loss of his sons, he spent years raising awareness and money for wounded veterans and worked closely with organizations like the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Vigiano died of cancer in July 2018 and is survived by his wife Jan.
