Councilwoman Jackie Gordon was joined by NYS Senator John Brooks, NYS Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, and SC Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory in the ceremonious dedication of Sgt. Robert “Bobby” Brooks Recreation Complex at Wyandanch Park amongst members of his family, friends and the community. Mr. Brooks or Sgt. Brooks as he was affectionately known, was a Vietnam Veteran who later became the first African-American 1st Assist Chief of the Wyandanch Fire Department. He also volunteered with the Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corp. and was very instrumental in getting Wyandanch Park revitalized.

To honor Sgt. Brooks, the Wyandanch High School JROTC, the Venettes Cultural Workshop Vocal Group and the Wyandanch Junior Beautification Ambassador Rosa Melendez participated in the ceremony along with his sister Mrs. Henrietta Smith who sang the National Anthem. Commander Jorge Rosario of VFW Post 2912, of which Sgt. Brooks was a member, performed the ceremonial folding and presentation of the American Flag to the family as a moving tribute of lasting importance. Bishop Randy Brown from the Bread of Life world Outreach Center blessed the event with the invocation. The Wyandanch- Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corp. was also there as was the Wyandanch Fire Dept. proudly displaying the American Flag from its ladder truck.
